Adelphi University’s 2023 devised First-Year Showcase, Unboxing. Following the first semester of acting courses at the collegiate level, it was our turn to be introduced to the department. I vividly remember our professor/ director asking if any of us could draw or paint. My hand, along with others, shot up without a thought. She introduced the idea of outlining the storyline of our introductory song based around Greek mythology, and I suggested a live, single-line chalk drawing. Through trial and error- and lots of fun- we ended up with a unique, night-by-night, accompaniment to the beginning number which loomed and contextualized through the duration of our show.
